Movie: Night of the Hunter

"Open the door, you spawn of the devil's own strumpet!" -- The Night of the Hunter (1955)

If you're looking for a good movie, and if you like suspense and drama, rent the Night of the Hunter. Robert Mitchum's character--a priest who's not really a priest--is incredibly memorable. Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear must have been inspired by Mitchum's performance. More movie recommendations here.

Movie: Nine Queens

Just saw the 2000 Argentinian film, Nine Queens (Nueve Reina). I try to remember at least one line from each film I see. This film's memorable line occurs after a character asks someone how much it would take for him to do a particular sexual act, hears rejections, and then increases the price until he sees hesitation:

You see? We're not lacking pillow-biters, just financiers.

Ah, the ongoing issue of morality, sex, and price. Overall, a good film. I give it 4/5 stars.

One of the Best Films Ever Made

I've just seen a wonderful Swedish film, Pelle the Conqueror. In 1988, it won an Academy Award for best foreign language film. The following year, it won a Golden Globe.

Pelle tells the story of two Swedish immigrants, an old father and his young son, who immigrate to Denmark around 1900. Like many immigrants, they dream of a better life, but are met with obstacle after obstacle. The world will not allow the father even the smallest of victories--whether it's a second job offer, a home to sleep in with coffee on Sundays, or the power to protect his son from bullies. Yet, somehow, the film manages to avoid being overly sentimental. If you're looking for a classic tale of a father and his son, you should not miss this film.

Incredible Romantic Movie

I highly recommend the 2005 film, Sweet Land. It's not a chick flick, but a sincere, heartfelt film about love in early America. Relevant links are below:

The world really is a small place and, as we move around it and commingle, we have the ability to recognize our similarities, to go beyond tolerance toward acceptance, to redefine communities and humanity out of new combinations of people, sounds, stories and, of course, food.
